Influenza | Portuguese Water Dogs Produce Wonderful Companions

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Portuguese Water Dogs have short hair that does not shed and is considered a working dog, meaning that it is a breed that needs to stay active. This breed is considered a hypoallergenic dog. Conventionally used to lend a hand in fishing expeditions, the Portuguese Water Dog is in this day and age kept as a house pet. Although this dog breed is not as widespread as other breeds, if you would like a dog that is hypoallergenic, vivacious, and enjoys companionship, then this dog breed can be the one for you.

Seeing as the Portuguese Water Dog is not bred as regularly as other breeds of hypoallergenic dog, you will have got to hunt for a breeder online, in the newspaper, or by calling breeders in your vicinity until you come across one. Usually happy dogs, the Portuguese Water Dog needs to stay active or it will get bored to tears. You should have plenty of toys for it to fool around with and you can want to mull over crate training when you are not at home. This means that the dog will remain in a crate when you go out so it does not wipe out your household. As soon as the Portuguese Water Dog gets bored or secluded, it will gnaw on everything it finds.

Crate training must start right after you get the dog home. By placing a blanket, toys and water into the crate, you will make the dog at ease while you are away. You must not use the crate when punishing the dog or it will not want to go in it when you depart for the day. After training the dog, you will have to keep up the practice. This will provide the dog structure and will also save your belongings. Keeping the dog in a crate whilst you are not at home will also lower allergens.

Portuguese Water Dogs require to be groomed every two months or so. There are two patterns that the majority of groomers follow, the retriever cut and the lion cut. The retriever cut means that the hair is cut uniformly on the body. The lion cut leaves that front half of the dog’s body covered with hair, despite the fact that hair on the hind legs is cut short. You have to take the dog to have his hair groomed if you are not happy cutting it by hand.

If you are considering buying a Portuguese Water Dog, you should be ready to have steady company. These breeds need to be walked and they need to be entertained right through the day. If you need to travel on vacation or for work, you have got to board the dog so it will not be abandoned. Portuguese Water Dogs usually live between twelve and fifteen years.

Portuguese Water Dogs are easy going and get along with children and most adults. If you are searching for a dog breed that does not shed and will fit in with your family, then the Portuguese Water Dog is the breed for you. Despite the fact that nearly all Portuguese Water Dogs are black, several are white or a fusion of both. Their hair is curly or wavy and comparable to that of the standard poodle. If you lead an active life or like the out-of-doors the Portuguese Water Dog might be an ideal pet.
