H1N1 | Seniors And H1n1 Swine Flu

Friday, January 29th, 2010

H1N1 swine flu is enough to cause anybody concern. Seniors are especially concerned, since information for them hasn’t been all that forthcoming. They often feel vulnerable due to their age and health conditions.

Both flu types, H1N1 and the regular seasonal flu, can cause major complications and have very similar symptoms:

Chills

Fever

Headache

Sore throat

Stuffy nose

Body aches

Cough

Remember:your doctor is the only one who can diagnose the type of flu you have.

Swine flu has attracted a lot of media attention for a couple reasons. For one, it is brand new, and because of this the general public needs accurate information about it. Also, it seems many people do not have antibodies built up yet to fight it off, as they sometimes have for seasonal flu. This equals more people being affected by H1N1.

It appears that the regular seasonal flu is of more risk to seniors than H1N1 swine flu, according to WebMD. Although H1N1 doesn’t seem to pose the same risks as the seasonal flu, H1N1 swine flu can still be dangerous for seniors if there are other health problems. Seniors at greatest risk are ones with:

Heart problems

Lung problems

Compromised immune system

Given the media attention to H1N1 swine flu, it may come as a surprise that the regular seasonal flu has a huge impact – it kills about 36,000 people yearly in the U.S.

Tips for Prevention

Seniors concerned about H1N1 swine flu should seriously consider getting themselves vaccinated. Also, care should be taken around others who are demonstrating the symptoms described above.

Sometimes it’s the simple things in life that help us most. Did you know that “hand washing can play a major role in protecting your health,” according to the Mayo Clinic? Some tips from them include:

After wetting your hands and applying soap, rub your hands together vigorously for at least 20 seconds. All surfaces of the hands should be washed, including under the fingernails.

Use a disposable paper towel to dry your hands, or an air dryer.

Use the towel to turn off the fawcet, if possible.

Regular soap is just as effective as antibacterial soap.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a great alternative to soap and water.

More Tips

Always cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing with a tissue. Dispose of the tissue immediately.

Avoid touching your mouth, nose, or eyes.

If you find yourself feeling ill, stay home if possible, and stay away from others.

Do You Have H1N1 Swine Flu?

If seniors think they have H1N1 swine flu or the seasonal flu, they need to go to their doctor as soon as possible. They should not try to diagnose which type they have by themselves. The disease can be reduced by taking antivirals within the first 48 hours. Even if it has been more than 48 hours, antivirals can still benefit people with the flu.

For those that care for seniors, they should wear a mask if they believe the person may have the flu. If you are a senior in a retirement community, you should stay isolated from others if diagnosed with the flu. For caregivers, they should stay home if they believe they have the flu to avoid spreading it to others.

Although seniors and H1N1 swine flu can seem scary, it’s important to remember that many people who get it recover completely. However, precautions against the virus are always recommended, since doctors and other researchers cannot say with certainty who will suffer adverse affects from the virus, and who will not.

Innovative companies such as Instant Care are always creating products to help seniors stay healthy. If you looking for a dynamic 24 Hour Nurse Line and Emergency Response System to help provide you with security and independence, visit http://www.myinstantcare.com today!

Bosch washers are available as both free standing and built-in appliances as integration of appliances is becoming more and more popular, especially for people who have cosier kitchens than others. If you have a separate utility room then space is something that you probably will not need to worry about and a free standing Bosch washer will cause you no problems in terms of available room.
