Any inflammation or irritation of the membranes that line the passages of the throat, nose and lungs can cause flu or thick mucus.
A little watery mucus is necessary to protect and lubricate the membranes, but too much and/or too thick mucus can cause a blocked or runny nose, coughs or earache. If the symptoms last more than a few days they may point to an infection (If the mucus is yellow or green) or colds, sinus problems, a poor diet or allergy.
What the Natural Doctors Recommend
Eat a nutritious whole food diet including plenty of fresh fruit, salads, vegetables, fish nuts, honey and wholegrain cereals. Drink plenty of spring water or fresh juices. Garlic is said to help.
Take regular outdoor exercise and make sure you are getting enough sleep. Try to avoid foods that are thought to encourage mucus production, such as milk and milk products, meat, eggs, animal fats, pulses, and those containing white flour, white sugar or food additives.
A treatment which can provide effective relief is to add the juice of half a lemon to a cup of warm water in a bowl, and inhale the mixture gently through the nostrils, right up to the back. It may make you sneeze and splutter, but is a good way of clearing catarrh from the nose. Repeat several times a day.
Advice will be given about diet, eliminating impurities from the body and treating constipation which naturopaths say is often associated with catarrh. Test for allergies especially milk and dairy products may be done and if necessary, a special diet will be drawn up.
Supplements such as vitamin B complex, vitamin C, bioflavonoid and zinc are sometimes prescribed. Initial fasting or a raw food diet may be suggested, but must be supervised.
