Flu | 10 Natural Remedies For Colds And Flu

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

When you come down with a cold or flu, there are many natural remedies to help alleviate symptoms. They are not only effective, but do not add more stress to your body as do conventional medications.

Following are ten of most popular natural cold and flu remedies around.

1. Echinacea. This herb is what is commonly known as the purple coneflower. Native Americans have used it for centuries to heal illnesses. It stimulates the immune system function, helping your body to more quickly and more efficiently fight off acute illnesses. It is best taken in a liquid tincture, and right at the onset of symptoms.

2. Garlic. Garlic is another plant that has been used for a long time by various cultures in treating illnesses. It contains allicin, a natural antibiotic that leaves the friendly bacteria in your gut alone, going after only the harmful ones. It also contains a high antioxidant level, thus promoting overall health.

3. Ginger. When the body is fighting off an illness, it produces high levels of prostaglandin which can cause uncomfortable symptoms in the body. Ginger acts as a barrier to this hormone, relieving you of potential headaches, cramps and fever.

4. Vitamin C. Taking this immune-boosting vitamin helps your body to fight off colds and flus more quickly. Better than taking supplements is consuming foods high in vitamin C, such as organic red pepper, organic oranges and steamed broccoli.

5. Eliminate all processed foods from your diet. Processed foods-even those labeled “organic” and/or “whole grain”–contain substances that depress the immune system and in general cause more stress to your body. Avoid them at all costs whenever you are sick.

6. Rest. When your body is fighting off an illness, it needs all the strength it can muster to do an effective, thorough job. Do as little as necessary, and lie down at least twice a day (other than bedtime) the first few days of a cold or flu.

7. Zinc. Not as well known as vitamin C as a nutritional immune-booster, zinc is just as powerful.

8. Hydrogen peroxide. This solution that your grandmother used to clean with has been shown to stop colds in their tracks if used at the first sign of symptoms. Put four drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide in each ear.

9. Homeopathic medicine. Homeopathics are safe and effective, but you need to do some research to have success with them. The reason is that which homeopathic you need depends on the kind of symptoms your body is manifesting.

10. Homemade broth. A bone stock made with onions, celery and carrots is loaded with all kinds of immune-boosting, bacteria-fighting nutrients. If you’re a vegetarian, a homemade vegetable broth that includes garlic and parsley will not be as high in certain nutrients, but still give your body a healthy burst of nutrition.

The next time you feel yourself “coming down with something”, give a couple of these remedies a try. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised with the results.
